Travelling to SnoBreak?
By Road
You can now visit Central Labrador in TWO DIRECTIONS
Via route 389/500 starting at Baie Comeau Quebec (Via 389), travel north east to Route 500 (we call it the Trans Labrador Highway) to Labrador City and then east past Churchill Falls towards Goose Bay. BE AWARE that this is mainly a gravel road, not paved, so please drive carefully. It is about a 14 hour trip.
The new road link is now open between Goose Bay and Cartwright, on the Atlantic seaboard. Travellers from Newfoundland can attend SnoBreak by using this new road through the Labrador Straits and south coast of Labrador. The ferry service from Cornerbrook, Newfoundland to Blanc Sablon, Quebec is now operating via the BOND twice weekly in the winter months. When there is severe weather, portions of this road may be closed to ensure your safety. Please call Transportation and Works for winter road conditions and information.
SAFETY NEWS - There is NO cell phone service on routes 500 and 510, but the Provincial Government has a program in place for you to "borrow" a satellite phone for use between Labrador City or Port Hope Simpson and Goose Bay. There is NO FEE for this service. Pick up and drop off points at the hotels in each town. For residents of Newfoundland you must provide a drivers licence or credit card. For non-residents, you must provide a credit card. The phones are only for emergency use and are programmed to enable direct calls to the police.
Satellite phones can now be picked up at the following participating hotels:
Wabush Hotel in Wabush;
Midway Travel Inn in Churchill Falls;
Hotel North Two and Royal Inn and Suites in Happy Valley-Goose Bay;
Cartwright Hotel in Cartwright;
Alexis Hotel in Port Hope Simpson; and,
Town Office in Charlottetown.
